Spironolactone

Spironolactone is used in dermatology as an androgen suppressant in the treatment of females with significant stigmata of their androgen excess. Such stigmata include facial hypertrichosis (non genetic) and acne secondary to androgen excess.

Contraindications:

  • Renal failure.

Precautions:

  • Hyperkalemia can occur in the presence of renal disease or with the use of potassium supplements.

Dosage:

  • A typical dose would be 100 mg po daily for many months.
