Scurvy

Synonym:

Vitamin C deficiency

Scurvy is secondary to a deficiency of ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Skin changes include follicular keratoses with coiled hairs, which are particularly prominent on the lower extremities.
Perifollicular hemorrhage is seen later, as are large ecchymoses, bleeding and swollen gums, and stomatitis.

Treatment:

  • 1,000 mg vitamin C daily produces a dramatic reversal of signs and symptoms. Treatment should be continued for several weeks.
  • There is usually an associated general malnutrition and that should also be corrected.
