Lupus vulgaris
Lupus vulgaris is an aggressive cutaneous form of tuberculosis in a patient with moderate to good host resistance.
There are many clinical variants including a plaque form, an ulcerating form, a vegetating form, and papulonodular and tumor-like forms.
Characteristic skin lesion is a plaque composed of nodules with an "apple-jelly" color.
As lesions expand peripherally, central scarring usually results.
Squamous carcinoma may develop in long-standing lesions.
Treatment:
- Standard multi-drug anti-tuberculous therapy is indicated.
- The use of single agents has no place in the treatment of tuberculosis.
