Furuncle

(fu'rung-kl) (Latin. Furunculus - a petty thief)

Synonym:

Boil
Abscess

A localized pyogenic infection originating in a hair follicle. A furuncle is an inflammatory nodule evolving into a pustule which then becomes necrotic, healing with a scar. It is caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Lesions may be single or multiple.

Treatment:

  • Treatment with systemic antibiotics directed at Staphylococcus aureus is indicated.
  • Application of a topical antibacterial, such as mupirocin, of the anterior nares is indicated to treat the carriage state
