Dermatology Glossary

Erysipelas

Erysipelas is a bacterial cellulitis caused by Streptococcus spp.
There is rapid progression of an erythematous warm indurated area, usually on the leg or face. The lesion can be very tender. When present on the leg, it is usually at a site of compromised vascular circulation. Bullae may develop in the area of cellulitis.

Treatment:

  • Systemic treatment with penicillin G or its equivalent is indicated.
  • Left untreated, streptococcal cellulitis is a potentially fatal condition.
