Contact Dermatitis - Allergic

Allergic contact dermatitis is a cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the application of an external allergen. Erythema, vesicles, bullae and associated pruritus can be present. Eventually, desquamation, hyperkeratosis and lichenification can occur. Allergic contact dermatitis should be suspected in the case of any chronic eczematous process.

Treatment

  • Identification of the allergen by history and patch testing is indicated. Patch tests to the most common contact allergens are readily available in most dermatology centers.
  • The dermatitis itself responds to medium strength topical glucocorticoids.
