Benign mucosal pemphigoid
Synonym:
Cicatricial pemphigoid
Benign mucosal pemphigoid is a blistering disorder which results in permanent scarring of the effected area.
Mucosal surfaces such as the ocular conjunctiva is a common site for this disease.
Chronic scarring is also commonly present in the mouth and genitalia.
Cutaneous sites can be involved.
Treatment:
- Co-management with an ophthalmologist is recommended.
- Subconjunctival injection of glucocorticoids may be required, with systemic steroids being used in the most severe cases.
- Immunosuppressive therapy with azathioprine is sometimes effective.
